Default Lots of Problems all of a Sudden

My old PIONEX just did the same things. I had 2 hard=20
drives in it, a quantum 12 gig bigfoot as main [C:] hard=20
drive and it also had a 6 gig quantum bigfoot as extra=20
space [D:] hard drive. After much messing around I got=20
scandisk to run and said drive C: was all messed up, tons=20
of bad sectors, missing files and things like that. so I=20
took out the 12 gig drive and moved the 6 gig to C: drive=20
and formatted it and did clean reinstall and works great=20
again, I am all done with quantum bigfoot hard drives, 3rd=20
one now that messed up on me. I just ordered a 17.2 gig=20
seagate to see how well it will work. Seagate came highly=20
recomended to me. I have a old Packard Bell with a small=20
seagate hard drive [3.3gig I think] and it works great and=20
just keeps on ticking along. this PIONEX has been jinxed=20
from the day we got it, no end of problems, which is good=20
for me trying to learn to fix puters, LOL. Tom

I wonder if anyone can help me. I am having a lot of=20

problems with my WIN 98 2nd Edition Compaq Presario 5716=20
computer and I am running out of options. I thought the=20
problems might be memory-related, so yesterday I installed=20
another 128 MB of RAM. Now all three sockets have 128 MB=20
each, and there are no more sockets. I have a lot of=20
memory and there is a huge amount of free space in the=20
hard disk pie. So we need to exclude space and memory=20
problems because the same problems persist even after=20
yesterday=E2?Ts installation of the new memory. =20
=20
One of my problems is that applications are very=20

sluggish. For example, it will take a good 30 seconds to=20
open a word document, and 15 to 30 seconds to open a web=20
page (I have speed internet Cable). Another problem is=20
that, very often, programs don't respond. I know it=20
because there is no action following a prompt, and the pc=20
gets locked (I can't go anywhere with my browser), and=20
when I click Ctrl + Alt + Del, the close programs window=20
says that the program I am using is not responding. =20

Finally, when I click on shut down, the screen dims for a=20

while and then a box appears with the following=20
message: "This program is not responding. It may be busy,=20
waiting for a response from you, or it may have stopped=20
running. Click cancel to ignore and return to Windows. To=20
close, click End Task. To give the program 20 seconds,=20
click wait." If I click on =E2?oEnd Task=E2?=9D usually nothing=20
happens. So if I click again and the screen isn=E2?Tt frozen=20
yet, a copy of the same window may overlap the original=20
window. Sometimes two or three partial windows overlap one=20
another. The whole thing eventually freezes, and I have no=20
choice but to manually shut down and restart the unit.
=20
Upon restarting, I notice that ScanDisk doesn=E2?Tt run=20

anymore to check for errors due to improper shut down. It=20
has stopped doing that several weeks ago, when all these=20
problems started. When I attempt to run ScanDisk from the=20
Systems Tools I get the following message: "ScanDisk=20
cannot check this drive now because the disk is not=20
properly formatted or a program such as disk utility has=20
locked it. Format the disk or wait for the utility to=20
finish and then restart ScanDisk."

Some of the desktop icons have lost their normal=20

appearance, almost as if there weren=E2?Tt enough memory to=20
support color-shaping and coding them. The desktop=20
background picture often becomes segmented, like sliced in=20
rows and rows of faces, legs, or whatever. Everything runs=20
extremely slow and incorrectly.
=20
Sometimes, when I try sending mail from a web page=20

through Outlook Express, I get the following=20
message: "Outlook Express could not be started. The=20
application was unable to create the spooler object. Your=20
computer may be out of memory or your disk is full.=20
Contact MS support for further assistance (0x8007000E),=20
or "The Address Book failed to load. Outlook Express is=20
incorrectly configured. Please re-install."
=20
When I try opening OE I get this message: "Outlook=20

Express couldn't be started because MSOE.DLL could not be=20
initiated. Outlook Express may not be installed correctly."
=20
Other error messages I receive: "MSGSRV32 caused a stack=20

fault in module USER.EXE @ 0006-00007556", or "Kernel 32=20
caused an invalid page fault in module USER.EXE @ 0006-
000016fc"

I=E2?Tm also been getting a =E2?oconnection=E2?=9D error message,=20

as follows: =E2?oNo connection to the internet is=20
currently available. To view internet content that has=20
been saved on your computer, click work offline. Click Try=20
Again to attempt to connect.=E2?=9D When I click =E2?oTry=20
Again=E2?=9D I get in. This message is totally inappropriate=20
because I have high speed internet cable meaning that I am=20
always connected to the internet.
=20
It bothers me that If I start anything: a project, a=20

research, open a document, send an email, or whatever, I=20
get interrupted because the pc can=E2?Tt perform a requested=20
task, or because the computer locks, ceases to respond, or=20
it sends me an Illegal Operation or Fatal Error message=20
that gets me booted out al together. Also, it takes=20
forever to open a web page, or any application, worse than=20
if I had dial-up, instead of cable.
=20
By the way, very important: ALL VIRUS SCANS, NORTON=20

DIAGNOSTICS, AND SYSTEMS DIAGNOSTICS REPORT NO VIRUSES AND=20
NO ERRORS. MS Windows update report no critical updates.=20
Add/Remove Hardware reports nothing new needing to be=20
downloaded. Can anybody help me?
