Some but not all NEC monitors have a reset button on them, otherwise removing
power for a set amount of time and restoring power is the only way I know of.

Have you tried NEC's support site or contacting them?

Select button and change the screen so dark you can't see built-in
menus to adjust the picture! Then the monitor seems to memorize the
setting. Is there some way to override this?

Unplugging & disconnecting didn't seem to do it.
