Default trouble installing PCMCIA Adapter

I've got a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop running Windows ME and I have =
trouble=20
getting a Level One WPC-0100 11Mbps Wireless PCMCIA Adapter (LAN) to=20
be recognised.
I have successfully installed IEEE 802.11b WPC Utility according to step =
1-3=20
in the PCMCIA Card Installation Process leaflet that came with the card. =

When I insert the card the little green light on the device comes on.
In step 4 of the Installation Process it says "Operation System will =
detect new=20
device and search driver automatically". But nothing seems to happen.
When I select the "Eject and Unplug Hardware" Symbol from the toolbar at =

the bottom of my screen it lists under Hardware devices only one =
"unknown=20
device". At the bottom of the Unplug and Eject Hardware window it says=20
"Unknown device at Location 1 on Texas Instruments PCI-4451 CardBus=20
Controller (not as indicated in one of the screen grabs in the user's =
manual=20
on page 17 in the Additional Note for Windows ME: "LevelOne 11Mbps=20
Wireless PCMCIA Adapter at Location 0 on 02Micro026812/6912 CardBus=20
Controller").
When I click on the desktop short-cut of the WPC Utility a little red =
symbol=20
appears in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen and if I click on it =
the=20
warning message IEEE 802.11b PCMCIA card is not ready.=20
When I click on PC Card in the Control Panel it says "Socket 1: Empty" =
and=20
"Socket 2: ". There's just an empty space where it should read =
PCMCIA=20
Adapter.
When I right click on My Computer and the properties I can't find a =
Level=20
WPC-0100 11Mbps Wireless PCMCIA Adapter either.
How do I remedy the situation?
