Default CDR drive not accessible

Thanks for trying to help. I expanded the CDROM category, and I tried to
remove both the CD-R and CD-RW drives in SAFE mode, but I get the same
message that I got when I tried removing just the CD-RW drive in SAFE mode.
That is "You selected a device category. Device categories cannot be removed.
Click the plus sign next to the device category, and then click the device
you want to remove." That is what I did, but it wouldn't let me remove them.
There is no "Other" category. Any other suggestions?

Restart in SAFE MODE*, then open Device Manager, expand the CDROM category, and
remove ALL items listed there.
If there is an "Other" category in Device Manager, expand it and delete all devices
there also.
Click OK, and restart in Normal mode (StartShutdownRestart).

While you are in Device Manager, make sure no other devices are shown with a red X
or an exclamation mark ! on them, indicating a problem.

*To restart in Safe Mode:
- Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu
(boot menu) appears.
OR
- Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the memory count to bring up the boot menu.
- Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter.

My CD-RW drive worked just fine until a few days ago. It recognized all CD-
Rs and CD-RWs , but now

I am using Windows 98.
