I recently used drag-n-drop to add about twenty new fonts to my Win98

alphabetic character (numbers don't seem to have been affected); . . .

Try right clicking the Fonts folder, get properties and make sure it
has the System attribute. If the attribute is already checked but
ghosted it's ok.

This type of display error often indicates something
wrong with the MARLETT font. / start / run / SFC.EXE
(System File Checker)
set to restore from the source just one file
c:\windows\fonts\MARLETT.TTF

The Marlett.ttf font is used for the min, max and close symbols in
the upper right corner of windows. It the font was missing or
corrupt those symbols would be messed up. Maybe they are and Fred
hasn't noticed it yet. Wouldn't hurt anything to replace the font
though.
