Keep us informed. Have you looked in...?...
(1) "START, run, MSInfo32, Tools tab, Automatic Skip Driver Agent" for a
clue?
(2) "Control Panel,
Add NewHardware,
Next,
Next,
Bolt 'No, the device isn't in the list',
Next,
Bolt 'No, I want to select the hardware from a list',
Next,
Highlight 'Mouse',
Next".
Examine the screen. What shows up highlighted in the left/right panes?
What are all the choices?

I have been there before (#2). Several times. But thanks for making
me go back again. Yes, there were many choices there, different
companies. No intellimouse though or M$ as others have suggested. I
had tried a few & was successful in loading them. But no scroll wheel
function.

This time back in there though, I tried another driver to load. It
wanted a disk with a serial number to load it. No good. I tried
another - now, even though the mouse in question is a PS/2 mouse, I
selected a standard serial mouse. Well guess what?! It worked!
I now can see mouse as a choice in control-panel\system. And the
serial mouse is loaded. And best of all, the scroll wheel now works!

A small drawback, but at least I know I can eventually get the right
driver - in control-panel\mouse, there still is no "wheel" selection.
So I am stuck at the default "3 lines" per scroll clip (I believe that
is default). I'd like to bump it up to 5 or 6 lines. But now I know
things are not all screwed up, & I'll be able to (hopefully) find a
good driver, and one that will change the mouse icon window to give me
a "wheel" selection of changing lines per scroll movement.

I tried loading other drivers before from there, but I guess they
never took, and thus no "mouse" selection in control-panel\system.
This time I had a Win 98 CD in the D: drive, so maybe it read from
there, but I really don't know. It must be that without any mouse
driver at all loaded, the basic 3 button mouse functions still work
for any mouse (??) - at least for the two PS/2 mice I tried.

Thanks again for making me re-visit where I needed to be & try
something else,
