Default Linksys Gigabit NIC

Unfortunately it appears it won't even maintain boot with the drivers installed,
I'd definitely try another make/model card. I had that same exact issue with a
Netgear NIC in one 98SE machine, yet every other machine I tried it in had no problem
at all. Swapped it out for an IBM card and had no issues at all. I also had a
lesser issue with an integrated 10/100/1000 interface and a Core 2 Duo processor
installed. The damn thing kept switching to Auto-negotiate 1000 Mbps shortly after I
set it back to Auto-negotiate, so I was forced to set it at 100Mbps/Full Duplex to
break it's spirit.

I've looked at a few Gig capable routers but I won't toss money on that fairly new
technology. 'The only good it would do me at this time would be if I wanted to beef
the LAN up a little for faster transfers. Three XP Pro machines here have
10/100/1000 which will be obsolete when/if they finally get the up and around those
speeds.

Good info, thanks! One problem is, I'm working through getting this installed
before there's actually anything to connect to, in advance of ordering DSL. I've
never seen this cause problems with a NIC installation before, but there's always
that first time. And, of course, there's the handicap of working long-distance to
support a system that I'm already fairly certain has major issues.

Network properties NIC Adapter properties Advanced tab. You may want to look
at the link speed also and make sure it's not set for or trying to use the
Auto-negotiate 1000 Mbps. Also if it's set to Autodetect you may want to set it
for 100Mbps/Full Duplex to keep it from any attempt at the higher speed.

This is a jumper or DIP switch on the card itself? Or something I have to set in
Safe Mode?

I'll take another look at Linksys KB with the below in mind.

Win98SE which has DUN and did have a NIC showing in Safe Mode
though it's not onboard and must have been removed some time
ago. Installed Linksys NIC (10/100/1000 Model EG1032, v3),

I've had startup problems with Win-98 and one particular brand of
gigabit NIC's (offhand don't remember the brand).

Problem was that I had set the NIC to 8k jumbo frame size - Win98
didn't like that. When changed to 4k, it booted and worked fine.
