P.S. If nothing works, try using a different Ethernet card.

Hi everyone,
I hope this is the right forum for this question, because
I can't seem
to unearth anything in the MS knowledge databse that
helps. I am
tearing my hair out trying to get my girlfriend's
internet connection
working. She's running an older HP (not sure which exact
model) with
windows 98. She is trying to connect through her
apartment complex's
internet connection via an ethernet card.
Being cautious, I installed the latest Zone Alarm
(5.something) before
I plugged in the box. All i get with IE are DNS errors.
I twiddled
around with the settings a little bit, and got nowhere.
Later that
week, the guy that owns the Internet Provider came by to
look at
things (it is a new building, and they have been having
some other
problems). He uninstalled Zone Alarm, and said that it
had caused the
problem. Now I wasn't there, and from what my non-techie
girlfriend
said, "There are 2 open connection ports, and Zone Alarm
blocked them.
And when he restarted the computer, even without Zone
Alarm, the
ports came back blocked."
Does this sound familiar to anyone? I know that I
probably didn't
provide all the necessary info, but I can if you ask.
Should I try to
contact a local IT guy, Zone Alarm, MS, or anyone else?
Please help
if you can, as I am having all the blame put on me at the
moment, and
you don't want to see my girlfriend when she can't check
her email!!!
Thanks a lot!
-Sean
