Default Repair Reinstall

Noel,

Thanks for the link. I searched for something like that, but couldn't find
anything.

WTF are you on about, Corday?
Neither problem that Mike mentions has ANYTHING to do with 'other functions
in the background' - it's simply that reinstalling earlier versions of IE
and/or WMP over later ones does seriously bad things to version integrity -
which isn't adequately checked during the reinstall.
If you need instructions on the proper methodology of a reinstall, look
here....
http://crashfixpc.co.uk/reinME.htm
Unfortunately, some of it's a little outdated now, as Ad-Aware, etc are no
longer Win9x-friendly - I'm working on a revision to address this issue -
but the essentials are still true

Both problems you mention are due to the disc being occupied by other
functions in the background. Forget the reinstall, just try running
Scandisc
in Safe Mode. Don't use a 3rd party defrag. If you have an Intel chip,
there's works better than anything else.

Milt,

The provisos Mart mentioned are that you need to be very careful about
reinstalling Win Me over itself if you have upgraded to using IE6 and/or
Windows Media Player 9. If either of these are true special steps need
to
be taken before reinstalling Win Me such as uninstalling IE6 via
Add/Remove Programs and renaming the WMP file wmploc.dll to wmploc.old.

Failure to do either of these steps will lead to major problems and what
is known as version soup and DLL Hell.

Is it possible to do a repair reinstll of ME? I've read that it is
and I've read that it isn't. I'm having a problem with functions such
as Defrag. and Scandisk hanging up and freezing the computer.
