Default Win98SE constant problems-ole32,shell32,other

| OLE32.DLL 4.71.3328 Microsoft Corporation Microsoft OLE for Windows and
| Windows NT C:\WINNT\SYSTEM\OLE32.DLL 03/29/1999 08:35:50 PM GMT Microsoft(R)

It's ODD yours seems newer than mine, which Windows Update never dared to update! That must be an important system file! Here is mine...

OLE32.DLL
Desc: Microsoft OLE for Windows and Windows NT
Loc: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
THAT'S... C:\WINNT\SYSTEM for you, though.
Size: 790,528 bytes
Mod: Friday, April 23, 1999 10:22:00 PM
Ver: 4.71.2900

That is old enough (in Win98SE) never to have been modified by an
update. Indeed, here is it's listing in WIN98_38.CAB...
04-23-1999 10:22:00p A--- 790,528 ole32.dll

So, extract it with SFC...

(1) "START button, Run, SFC"
(2) Bolt "Extract one file from installation disk"
(3) Enter "OLE32.DLL" in the "Specify..." box.
(4) Click "Start".
(5) It should offer to "Save file in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM".
If not, make it so. No! Make it... C:\WINNT\SYSTEM.
(6) In "Restore from", if not already pre-filled, browse to
(a) Installation CD (likely the Win98 folder) or
(b) The folder that has your cabs on the hard drive, unlikely
"C:\WINDOWS\options\cabs\". But it will be similar!
(7) Click "OK"

If it discovers the file already exists, it will offer to back it up.
May as well do so. If it discovers the file is "in use", it will request
that you reboot to complete the install.

The backup will be put in.. C:\WINNT\helpdesk\SFC.. (for you).
To restore it yourself, if necessary, in DOS...

COPY C:\WINNT\helpdesk\SFC\OLE32.DLL C:\WINNT\SYSTEM

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,

| FIRST I appologized for the oversized post, having said that:
|
| I have read and applied the various 'fixes' for problems associated with the
| newer updates, such as no link, no new, no ability to use update site [still
| unable], etcetterras.. via manual fixes, such as re-registering the files,
| etc.
|
| I have tracked most of the problems to ole32.dll being the wrong version
| (makes calls to userenv and other [see below] due to other upgrades/critical
| updates) and shell32.dll, via the use of Dependancy Walker, MSINFO, and
| other tools.
|
| I have been unable to find any update or upgrade which has these files
| within them. Need to fix these problems as they interfer with other programs
| and occasionally cause crashes, and of course, the inability to apply
| critical updates [can't even download from catalog].
|
| I have downloaded all updates available via the corporate access, however,
| none seem to contain anything which will correct these problems.
|
| To negate further questions of versions/conflicts/ applied "fixes" etc.:
