Default Problem With Microsoft Photo Editor

Yep, repairable. I have the fix saved, just in case. MPE is an "editor",
and I don't think a good one. Irfanview is primarily a viewer, but so much
more. I love the resize/resample feature too, etc... You can view
thumbnails
too. Great little program, wouldn't be without it!! Incidently, the creator
of
this program will personally respond, if you email any support
issue/problem.

Yep associations get changed and kill the thumbnail view, but it is
repairable, easily like this
http://www.dougknox.com/utility/scripts_desc/fixpix.htm so you can install
effective image manipulation software without losing the few good things

about
windows defaults

| Hello,
| I love Irfanview and have been using it for yrs. I don't ever install

MPE.
| The default for W98se is to open .jpg's or gif's w/IE and bmp's w/Paint
| etc... I would *never associate* these files to Irfanview and I *keep

the
| default to open w/IE*. You can loose your ability to view thumbnails in

your
| folders if you change these defaults. Further, when installing any

Microsoft
| Office version... this will happen, (my experience). If you check to

install
| MPE, MPE will change the defaults and .jpg's now will open w/Photo

Editor
| and not IE.
| *But worse*... you now no longer have thumbnail view in folders, (also
| my experience). Therefore, I associate little to Irfanview, .png and

..wmf
| only, and right now .psd, because I have a new install of Windows and I
| haven't installed Photoshop yet. I work heavily w/graphics and I don't
| install the CAG, (Clipart Gallery for MS Office). I use *Irfanview

instead*.
| All my picture media is organized into what I call a media catalog

folder,
| I choose insert picture, background, etc. from inside the program I'm

using;
| OE, Ppt, Word, etc... and I start the browse. When I open a folder, I

right
| click on the first file and use the *send to Irfanview option*. Now I

just
| start
| playing the files in the folder... either manually or automatically

until I
| find
| the file I need.
|
| The above references only my experience and I hope it's helpful. I

suggest
| caution always in changing file association, especially default

settings.

| In addition, IrfanView can open many JPG images that Microsoft Photo
| Editor
| cannot open! I've made IrfanView my default viewer for JPG files, but

I
| still employ Microsoft Photo Editor for BMP images. If I were you, I
| would
| add both IrfanView and Microsoft Photo Editor to my SendTo folder
| "C:\Windows\SendTo". (Simply drag and drop a shortcut to each program
| into
| the 'SendTo' folder). Now you can right-click on any image file and

send
| it to the program you wish to use, regardless of which program is the
| designated default program for that particular file type.

| | Thanks a lot. I downloaded and installed infanview and I love it.
| | You are right. It is much better than Microsoft Photo Editor.

| | Go to www.irfanview.com and download the image viewer.
| | When you install it you will get an option to associate
| | your JPG files (and others, if you want) with the viewer.
| |
| | You can still open Microsoft Photo Editor and access your
| | JPG files from the menu option (File / Open) or by
| | dragging and dropping, but if you are mostly interested
| | in just viewing your images Irfanview is a much better
| | viewer and a much more suitable default association.

| | -----Original Message-----
| | All of a sudden when I click on a .jpg file in Windows
| | Explorer I get
| | the error message, "This file does not have a program
| | associated with
| | it for performing this action. Create an association in
| | My Computer
| | by clicking View and the clicking Folder Options." I
| | don't know what
| | to do next!
| | I do know that Microsoft Photo Editor is installed
| | because I can bring
| | it up by clicking on irs icon and then using fileopen
| | to open a .jpg
| | file
| | Help would be appreciated.
