Default Scandisk & format hard disk

Hi Mart,

Beat me to it again! vbg I concur that a failing hard drive seems to be
a distinct possibility here.

The insufficient memory error could be due to the use of a third party
drive overlay or because the drive is bigger, than I think, 64GB. MS
KB229154 may be of relevance ""Your Computer Does Not Have Enough Free
Memory to Defrag the Drive" Error Message"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=229154) which includes as one of the
symptoms the message "Scandisk could not continue because your computer
does not have enough available memory."

When reading KB229154 I was amused to see that it has been updated and now
has as the suggested solution "upgrade your Windows operating system to
Microsoft Windows XP or later." whereas as previously it said "To resolve
this issue, contact the manufacturer of the third-party hard disk tool to
inquire about a possible update to the software that resolves this issue."

Hmm...

Please confirm that you are trying to run scandisk from your WinMe
"Startup (floppy) Disk", i.e. in Real Mode DOS. and you've NOT chosen
option 4) Minimal Boot. (Use option 2 or 3)

Might also be worth trying the 'unconditional format' switch :-
format c: /u

If that proves successful, be sure to perform a thorough scan (surface
scan).

Still sounds like a failing HDD though. Good luck.
