According to the MS website, Win ME needs to be installed on your
first partition


This is only the case if you wish to use Microsoft's somewhat pathetic
attempt of a boot manager. Using a proper boot manager such as BING or
even Boot Magic then no such restriction applies but you do need to read
the relevant documentation.
