Default problem with ethernet card following reformatting harddrive

Just some background::::
"I have a pavilion 7920 with a XP upgrade. Thru my attempt at cleaning out
unneeded/unused files, I must have deleted stuff I actually needed.
Rebooted, and It was ok for a short while, then the screen went to black.
Ran disks 1 and 2 of system recovery(that came with the computer), and the HP
screen came backup, started to boot up the Windows ME, then it went to a
"sorry, something happened, try last know good config"with three options:
Last good config, safe mode and safe mode with network.
None worked, wouldn't go in safe mode, just kept circling from the HP screen
to the windows screen to the "open in last good config/safe mode screen"
which doesn't work. Shuting completely down does nothing.
I have the 3 system recovery disks, my newer XP disks, and that is about it.
The 3rd Application recovery disk (3 of 3) does nothing and trying to run the
XP disk does nothing"

NOw, reformatted, but the cable modem software(Time Warner) tells me that my
PCI ethernet card is not working. That I do not have a network adapter. The
self fixes do not help.
I opened it up, and reinstalled the card.x2 I only have cable modem and no
dial up to download anything except to my other laptop computer.
What is the problem and what can I do?
