Default Viking card reader problems

A friend recently got a Sony Ericson fobile moan, with camera as they all
seem to be these days; unfortunately the software that came with it doesn't
support '98. No problem, I thought - I'll get him a card reader (that does
support '98).

The one I got is by a make something like Viking (bought from ebuyer [not
ebay] in the UK). What follows applies to both the drivers on the CD that
came with and those downloaded from Viking's website - I think they're the
same. the reader is called something like 12-in-1.

Drivers seem to load fine (loading drivers first, as seems to be the
recommended way for most USB things under '98 these days). Plugging in
reader gives new hardware found, and the usual sort of loading windows
(isn't it irritating that they always pop up overlaying each other and can't
be moved!), but at some point during this process, the system locks up, and
I have no option but to reset it and restore from an ERD I did just before.

(I didn't have any cards in the reader at the time.)

1. Anyone else experience with this particular reader?

2. Any suggestions that don't involve the universal USB support drivers
mentioned here recently?

3. If I do have to try those, should I remove the non-universal drivers? If
so how?

Thanks for any help anyone can give.
