Ken,
With regard to your scrambled icons, give this little app a try, it
will put your icons back to their original positions after being in the Safe
Mode. The app is Iconoid, free, from http://www.sillysot.com/ . Word of
caution, don't do the "Icon Dance" feature.......it's a real drain, but, the
other features are great.

I only run (or try to run) ScanDefrag after the computer fails to shut
down
properly (alternatively defrag in Safe Mode which runs all right but
scrambles all my desktop icons). Apparently MMTASK began to fail under
ScanDefrag late in January, never before that and consistently
thereafter.

Any help greatly appreciated.
