Default Dial-up Networking

Hi Noel: I understand and appreciate your recommendation to install a good
antivirus program. I'll check on www.grisoft.com since you believe the A/V
is fully functional.

Currently, after removing McAfee's A/V Scan, this is what I have:
1) Norton Personal Firewall, and 2) AdwareAlert Scanning (I happen to be
pleased with this one).

Thanks again for your help. It's appreciated/

Regards,

Ed

PLEASE install a virus scanner - Stinger ONLY looks for 54(?) variants of
specific internet worms, not for the other 250000 viruses out in the

wild!!
(and only looks for those when asked!)

I agree, McAfee virus scan is a hog - my usual recommendation for the
general user is AVG (www.grisoft.com) which has either a free version, or

a
paid version (which has more options - but the free version is
fully-functional)

Good morning Ern,

Thank you and thanks to Noel. The step-by step procedures you provided
are
complete.
Happy to report that I don't have any viruses, trojans, et al.

I have not encountered the original situation with Dial-up Networking
saying: "another program is dialing the selected connection".
Loved the Stinger program you guys provided. It only took 20 minutes to
run, as opposed to 2 hours with McAfee's A/V pgm I had on my computer,
which
I decided to remove.(The latter is really a "hog" and eats all your
resources.)
Thanks again and regards,

Ed

Nope, it is still in your news account as your email address. In

Outlook
Express on the Tools menu select Accounts and on the News tab, select

the
Microsoft account and click Properties, change the email address there.

I have no idea what your er, error message means but it does seem
suspicious. There are endless posts in this group about detecting

Hijacks
so
I shall steal some advise from one of Noel Paton's:

"You may already have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that

A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/averttools.asp

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install,
update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties

from
your system."

Regards,
ern.

Ernie,

Let's see whether my e-mail address is gone.

Thanks,

Thanks for getting back. The exact message in dial-up networking

reads:
"Another program is dialing the selected connection."

Thanks.

Ed

P.S. I'm new at this. If my e-mail address shows up again, would
appreciate
you let me know how to turn it off.

Please do not use your email address in this forum. Also, what
exactly
does
the popup message say?

Running Win Me dial-up connection, IE 6.0

When opening IE thru ISP(PeoplePC.com), the dial-up network

flashes
in
the
tray bar, I click on it and it reads that another program is

dialing
the
selected connection.

There are no other ISP's. All settings for IE, modem, dial-up
and
OE
are
thru the above ISP (can't get an answer from them).
Any ideas as of why this behavior is occurring?
Would appreciate an answer.
Thanks,
Ed
