Default Compaq 2286: Flash Drive (SanDisk Cruzer mini) won't work to transfer files to new mac...

Thanks! Found a page, downloaded an American version from the U of
Wisconsin... but it was about a dozen files. Am not sure which one to
open.

Then I download directly to the CD burner drive, right?

Thanks, Bob!

Exotic could be a fun challenge and free is always good.

I will try this from the mac.

Is there one particular web site to visit for the download? I looks
like it is listed in many places -- but first hit on google said their
server is down... is it available in many different places?

This might seem a bit exotic, but it will be free, and might have other
uses:

Download the ISO file for KNOPPIX, a free LINUX distribution that runs
directly from CD (or DVD). Do this on any computer with a high-speed
copnnection, a CD/DVD burner, and software that can burn from a file (e.g.,
Easy CD Creator, Ner). Note that the smallest KNOPPIX ISO is about 700 Meg,
thus the need for the high-speed connection.

Boot the old PC from the KNOPPIX CD. If necessary, change the BIOS boot
order to CD first, then hard dirve. Be default KNOPPIX will NOT write to
the hard drive, but it can read FAT and FAT32. KNOPPIX is not as limited as
98. It will recognize USB 1 and 2, firewire, NIC cards, ZIP drives, etc.
Try plugging in the USB flash drive. Assuming that it is recognized, use
the KNOPPIX file manager to copy files to it.

You could copy all personal files, but consider how you will view them on a
MAC? JPG, MOV, TXT will certainly work with native MAC softweare. DOC may
work, depending on what workprocessor you have. I am not sure about other
file types.

I finally am getting rid of my '99 Compaq 2286 Presario which runs
Windows 98. (Not the SE Second Edition.) I want to move files to the
new computer (a mac G4) so I bought a SanDisk Cruzer Mini USB flash
drive to transfer files, but discovered that my Win 98 doesn't have a
driver for this flash drive.

There is a driver for Win SE, but I can't find a way to download that
version so that I can then download the flash drive driver. Are you
following? Win98 is not reading the flash drive.

So now what? Any suggestions? It's not a lot of files, but too much to
email to myself and put on the new computer.

Thanks for your replies/ideas.
