Some of those are better than others. If you find a task you want to disable...

(1) If it's a running app, check it menus or R-Clk it's icon for an option to shut it down.

(2) "START button, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab".
Some would prefer to uninstall it, though, instead of using that tab.

(3) "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall tab".
