Seamey, it would seem that the Time Stamp disrepancy is due to you posting
via MS CDO and picking up the Redmond clock in the USA to Time Stamp, as you
are not using Outlook Express and thus your local clock (see discussion
further down this thread) so it would appear that I introduced a Red Herring
g

NB You might find it easier (understatement!) to read these News Groups
using OE - and for the life of me, I can't remember the link to 'idiots
guide to setting up MS News Groups in Outlook Express' - but I'm sure that
someone will direct us to it g

The Greyed-out / faded folders/files issue is (as I expected) another Red
Herring and I guess that by now you will have recognised/understood their
significance (Hidden/System) - so nothing to worry about there g

Which just leaves you with the CD-ROM issue. I guess you mean

Certainly sounds reasonable enough.

If you are thinking of replacing it yourself, you shouldn't have any
difficulty. It appears to have instructions included. Just be sure to set
the M S CS jumper to exactly the same position as that of the old CD-ROM.

clock set for am or pm?? Nah... it's 8 hrs not 12 hrs wrong.

Perhaps the 8hr discrepancy has something to do with posting via MS CDO
rather than using Outlook Express - maybe someone else can explain.

Typically, what sort of files & folders are "greyed out"? (In Windows
Explorer?)
Right-click on one (or few) and select Properties.
Are they 'System' files/folders? What are their attributes shown as
(compared to those NOT greyed-out)?

When booting from the floppy Startup Disk, you *should* have seen TWO
CD-ROMS, becoming the E: and the F:, so the screen *should* have
shown:
Drive E:= Driver MSCD001 UNIT 0
Drive F:= Driver MSCD001 UNIT 1
Your CD-ROM Is Drive E

In other words, ONE of your CD-ROM drives was missing!!! (NB. although
it
is
a DVD, DOS only recognises it as a CD-ROM)

(Don't worry that you didn't also see a further line "Your CD-ROM Is
Drive
F" - you won't.)

My revised guess is that a visit back to whoever fitted your DVD

I wouldn't really recommend any specific make of CD-ROM as I think
most
are
made by only a couple of manufacturers and just re-badged. Mine are
LG
but
don't take that as an endorsement. Try your local PC store (PC
World?)
and
see what they have to offer. You may wish to think of replacing it
with a
burner (CD-RW) but you will need suitable software.

In the meantime, I'll have a think about the 'faded folders'

NB. You won't see your CD-ROM in DevMan in Safe Mode, the
drivers
are

However, if your not seeing it in Normal Mode, then boot

WinMe
(floppy) Startup Disk and select 'With CD-ROM support' and

You're right I can't open the CD-ROM from the button at the front

CPU
and the Orange light is on permanent were it's normally off or
flashing
