And now, next sign of progress: I found it in the tray,

and it reported 81%, 81%, and 92% free.
What's my next step, Mike?

Now you've uninstalled the modem and let Win Me redetect its drivers
(you have done that I hope) and uninstalled and reinstalled DUN (you
have done that I hope) then the next step is to try and use the modem.
Before that though what does Dev.Man have to say about the modem?

Mike, I'll go back and recheck all those, but I believe that I
have removed all trace of the Conexant modem. All that Dev.Man
should show is the onboard 56k generic modem drivers. I believe that
I have uninstalled and re-installed DUN. My PC came with Conexant
Soft56K modem on the MB, and it works fine in the XP OS. I wanted to
use it from Me with the 9X/Me driver I downloaded but installing that
downloaded driver is what set my machine into its present mode. While
I go over to get more info, are we now convinced that the 64K stacks
are in good shape? Is there any way to check that part out without
involving the suspicious Conexant software?
