Not strictly a Windows 98 issue but here it is:
I have a Quantum Fireball 541 which transfers data at a very slow rate
according to HdTach.
Is there a utility for turning the rate up to the expected rate that I
can download, I have powermax but it does not include this function and
neither does Maxblast according to the blurb.

ernie, what does Your hdtach.log say after you run the test?

For 'Read Only' mine says:

HD Tach version 2.70
Drive: Maxtor 6B250R0 BAH4
Random Access time: 8.8ms
CPU utilization: 9.3%
Read Burst speed: 114.3MB/s
Average read speed: 59MB/s (max 87.8MB/s - min 55.8MB/s = average:
59.2MB/s

Rick, thanks for highlighting the logging function, but it ain't working. I
get:

HD Tach version 2.61
Drive: GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE47

and that's it. As I said in my reply to Eric, there is another drive on the
cable which gives more appropriate results (but also gives a blank log) the
figures being 15.3MB/sec for the duffer(slave) and 30.3MB/sec for the
master. Also, I got this drive out of my other computer where it was
attached to a controller card and was similarly slow compared with the rate
it should have achieved and was achieved by other drives.

I should say that I was trying to get this drive to do some reporting of
it's SMART status but had no luck but a worry is that the utility for that
changed something in the drive to cause this performance decrease.
