BUT I DONT HAVE ANY PERIPHERALS ATTACHED TO THE PC. Its a networked PC.
Does
not have modem, printer etc except network card.

Try this:

Shut down. disconnect printer if on LPT port. Disconnect mouse.
Disconnect any peripheral that uses LPT or COM ports. Restart, holding
down the Ctrl key (or F8 sometimes works better) until you see the
Startup menu. The timing is tricky, and you may need to repeatedly press
the key instead of holding it down, in order to avoid a Stuck Key error.
(Can also simply use MSCONFIG, Advanced button to "Enable Startup Menu"
before shutting down.) At the Startup Menu, choose Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, go to Device Manager. Remove ALL ports and any
devices that use them. This typically includes modem (even an internal
modem), related modem devices like PCI Enumerator and Wave Device for
Modem (in Sound section), printer(s), and mouse, of course. Might also
include a scanner if connected via LPT. Look, while you're there, for
duplicated entries in any of Device Manager. It is typical to find
duplicate entries in the System and USB sections, but in any case, write
all of them down and report back here with the list (just the duplicated
items.) When you're finished cleaning up, restart and let Windows
reinstall the ports. When it gets to the Desktop, shut down. Attach the
mouse and restart. Try a few restarts to test. Eventually, you'll want
to shut down, re-connect printers and other peripherals, restart and
reinstall whatever is left to reinstall.

Hi,

I have windows 98 in my PC. I use serial logitech mouse. The problem

is
whenever i restart the machine the mosue does not work. Then i go to

the
system manager, remove the COM 1 and when i restart the machine it

works.
Then again after shutting it down and when i restart it does not work.

Again
i have to do the same, going to system manager and removing it etc...

I tried
connecting the mouse in COM 2. But the problem did not solve. It was

still
the same. There is no conflict in IRQ. Could anyone give me a solution

....
please ?

his directions still apply ....you may 'ghosted' ports ...removing all off
them in safemode and rebooting will let windows redetect them properly
