Well, it took awhile, but . . . it's back! Things actually got worse before
getting better. Downloaded two new MS Critical Updates and wound up with
errors at startup not recognising newly installed hardware (there was none).
Lots of lock ups and cold boots later, and tryed to work around this. System
Restore would not operate earlier, but I finally defragged in Safe Mode, then
ran System Restore several times unsuccessfully . . . the third time with
restore point of nearly 2 months ago ran properly, and I now have audio back,
plus my powermonitor works as well. MS Windows remains fickle, and a mystery
to me, but it's running once more! Thanks for your assistance.

Usually a total uninstall ( including removal of the sound card, if
appliccable, with a fresh reinstall of the card and the program will do the
trick.
Did you check your three connections in the back, as Mike suggested?

Computer is a ThinkPad i Series Four Model 1300. Speakers operate, since
occasionally will emit a faint 'pop' when retreiving mail, etc. Is there

On my PC, there are 3 jack sockets on the back, mic., line in &
speakers. Have you checked that the speakers are plugged into the
correct socket, it's an easy mistake to make.
