Default AC97 Sound Card Shown in Device Manager but not in Multi-media Preferred devices

Those problems should have shown up in DM in Safe Mode!

Unless your webcam/digicam are plugged in when you reboot, then windows
shouldn't attempt to reinstall the drivers for them.....
Power down
Unplug both cameras from the PC
Boot to Safe Mode,
Remove ALL 'Other Devices'
Remove ALL error-flagged Devices (yellow '!', red 'X', green '?') - you'll
have to expand the tree completely to be able to check them
Remove ALL instances of duplicated or non-existent devices
Uninstall your HP printer
Reboot to Normal Mode - what attempts to install now?
rerun hwinfo - what shows?
Reboot to Safe Mode - - what show as errored?

Thanks for the URL re the d/t icons. That just what i need. I will use it

as
soon as Ive resolved my sound card problem.

Ive done what u said in safe mode. When i return to normal mode DM tries

to
re-install 2 unknown devices. I guess they are my webcam & digital cam. I
have the disks handy but have not re-installed yet. All looks OK in SM DM.
However, still no sound card other that in DM as before.
I found the Microsoft program hwinfo /ui which i have run. I dont know if
the parts of its report gives u any further info re my problem.

Problems....shown in red in report

ActivIcons is the app you want, I suspect
http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_aifw.html

WRT DM entries -
in Safe Mode

Remove ALL instances of duplicated devices
Remove ALL error-flagged entries
Remove ALL entries in 'Other Devices'
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall required drivers
