Hi marinfr :-)

renamed the explorer.exe file to .old and rebooted. The
system comes up fine but can not load IE. I receive the
same error "Explorer Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module
Unknown" Explorer will now close. I hit okay and the

system is fine stable and it appears that I can run any
other program . Thanks for your help on this. Any other
thoughts?

A couple.....one is that Norton does not work well with ME, it has been
known to cause a good number of problems. Most any of the regulars here
will tell you that running Norton on ME is sort of asking for problems of
the unusual and sometimes, unsolvable kind. Also, this kind of error is
hard to troubleshoot because it is rather vague in just where the problem is
coming from, what is causing it. Thus, it makes it harder to find a
solution.

A couple of things that come to mind is 1) in what manner did you reinstall
IE,
IE Install/Uninstall
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/ReInIE.htm

and.. 2) if you have applied all the necessary updates after reinstalling
it.

First, go here and click on the Start scan and see what updates are not
installed and install them one at a time. DO NOT install them all at once.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Second, a program called Belarc, which will scan your system and determine
which updates have actually been properly installed:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

This will make sure all updates have been properly installed.

Also............

It is possible you have a hijacker, malware, spyware or parasites on your
system that can cause this problem. In addition to running your updated
anti-virus program, you should do the following to be sure none of these are
present on your system. Follow all instructions carefully:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
Also be sure to use the HijackThis. Please do not post your log to this
newsgroup, but to the SpywareInfo or the Aumha HiJackThis forums
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30, to allow the experts there to
evaluate your log and advise you of the necessary steps to clean your
system.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, get a copy of WINSOCKFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Hi marinfr :-)

I have a ME machine which had a virus but has been
cleaned. I have run both spyware and Adaware and cleaned
the machine as well. Now the Internet expolere reponds
with "Explorer Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module
Unknown" when attepted to be opened.

Have run IEradicator and removed IE reloaded it with no
change. ran Norton utilities no help. The machine seems
fine and has a ton of software installed on it. I thought
I would try to reload ME but from what I have read that
will not work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try the following and see if it helps:

Windows Millenium Edition (Me)

In Windows Millennium, use an Emergency Boot Disk to boot the
computer to MSDOS mode Without CDROM Support. For more information
about how to create an Emergency Boot Disk, click the article
numbers below to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

At the A:\ Prompt, type Ren c:\explorer.exe explorer.old, and then
press ENTER.
Restart the computer.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this
thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps
