Default Best registry cleaner/fixer?

The best one I found is a Norton product called Cleansweep 2001. Among
other things it does, it has a registry cleaner. It has a safe setting, and
two escalating less safe settings after that. I always used the safe
setting, and am gun shy about modding the registry irregardless. This has
worked to date.

Cleansweep keeps a copy of the registry prior to making any changes.
Problem is, if you cut too deep, windows may fail to load, so you can't load
Cleansweep. (Haven't seen this in Cleansweep safe mode) So, you can't
restore the former settings. Then, you gotta use tools in safe mode or dos
to get you outta trouble. Many Norton disk and windows utility products
tend to allow overkill getting the user in trouble. Don't recommend using
it unless you're very conservative when using it.

The 2002 version is available via google find for purchase. Don't get
systemworks which bundles Cleansweep, it will get you into trouble and weigh
your system down.

I tried one complicated registry checker (above MS) and found it deleted

all
the links between images and my programs. So I restored everything.
However, this has made me gun-shy relative to cleaning up the registry.
What's the best, easiest, most reliable/dependable registry cleaner out
there, of all the possibilities?

Thanks.
