I fully understand your commitments, Sandi, and do wish that your
excursions are more enjoyable than
the sessions you are willing to take on to help the 'needy' computer's users.
My progress in getting clearer answers about the nagging problem has been
quite slow. I have still to get
more feedback, specifically about the use, if attempted, of LSPFIX.
According to what you are saying
and what the Article says, there might be a good chance that it might work.
Unfortunately, no feed back,
yet. I apologize for this all. Mary Ann's health problems do have priority.
As mentioned elsewhere, Mary Ann can log on to Yahoo using the Computer of
her Aunt's, who lives
next door to me. That Computer uses Net-Zero to dial up to the Internet. Her
own Computer use Alltel to
dial up. However, once on the Internet, all the activities are inoperative.

I do remember that Mary Ann's machine had quite a few virus/spyware
software
on her machine. I was able to clear most of it up, but I suspect some of
it
corrupted something that is not allowing her to connect to Yahoo to get
her
email. It appears she is connecting to her ISP but not to the internet
as
no web pages will come up.
I didn't install anything on the machine that would make a difference nor
did I do anything to the hosts file (that's beyond my skill).
Sorry I can't shed any more light on it. It's very difficult from a
distance to diagnose these type of problems.

Hopefully, this may trigger thoughts in your mind at to what might have
occurred while Nick was busy at his Aunt's Computer. In my case, I keep
wondering about the essential files or settings required to be in place in
order to access the Web. Are there some files that might be missing and
found
to be so by searching for their presence? Or corrupted and reinstallable
in
some way?
Some time back, I installed a Firewall.....it might have been EZArmor.
Soon
thereafter, I had to uninstall it since it kept me for accessing the Web
or
maintaining my connection to it.

successfully to the Internet. Her answer was that all was in place.
By
that,
I presume she had view of various options she had been familiar with
when
things worked well.
As to your question if she was sure to be connected to the ISP, I am
not
sure, in the case of Alltel or Yahoo, which of the two is the real
ISP.
From
what I currently know, she cannot connect to Yahoo or any site on the
Internet. I will have to ask more specific questions to be able to
give
better answers. Hopefully, this can be done in short time. The friend
is
afflicted by various health problems and it is not always appropriate
to
insist on quick responses.
Early on, she did tell me that the connection problems started when
an
out-of-town nephew went to visit and was asked to see if he could
clear
the
constant pop-ups that drove her mad, whenever she was logged and
things
were
fine. He went thru some (unknown) activities to prevent the pop-ups,
but
ultimately said that he must have deleted or changed something
because he
could not get any Home Page or other transactions to work on the
Internet,
any longer.

A 'not so close by' friend has problems connecting to Yahoo and/or

When contacted, Alltel tried to help, but was not able to and
eventually
suggested to contact HP support. HP, it appears, that, whether it
can
or
not,
will charge $40 simply for talking to you and answering a couple
of
questions. Other charges may be assessed for additional questions.
Yahoo, contacted by Email thru use of a mutual friend's Computer,
has
not
offered any suggestions or answers.
This initial information is not clear, at least to me, but
hopefully
someone
may have some answers or suggestions.
