Default computer reboots into safe mode

On Tue, 7 Feb 2006 11:17:53 -0500, "*selah*"
put finger to keyboard and composed:

Sometimes our computer reboots automatically into safe mode when
starting from a cold boot. When it does this, we also get the message
that a file, fdce.vxd is missing and that the registry or win.ini refers
to it. I tried searching for it in win.ini and the registry and deleted
it from the registry but we still get this message when booting into
safe mode. This doesn't happen in normal mode.

Would appreciate any help with getting rid of this message and
preventing the automatic reboot into safe mode.

Thanks.

I'm wondering whether you have two separate issues.

When the PC boots normally, all the kernel drivers (*.vxd files) are
loaded. Any app that requires these drivers will then find them. In
safe mode, some drivers will not be loaded, causing any dependent apps
to complain. I'd look for clues in the list of Kernel Drivers in the
Software Environment of msinfo32.exe. You could also check this
registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD

Once you have determined which app requires fdce.vxd, you may still be
no wiser as to the reason for your spontaneous safe mode reboots. All
you will know for sure is that a certain autostarting app requires a
driver that is loaded during a normal boot but not during a safe mode
boot.
