Default Windows 98 SE: Windows Explorer asks for Internet connection

Hello again,

It seems that the only way for my configuration to avoid the problem is to
stick with setting the WE in Classic style ONLY. When I returned after
another cold boot as a normal course of daily business to my machine, having
set the customization of viewing WE as a Web Page, the problem returned.
Though it was convenient to see the directory in larger print aside the file
list (I use detail mode), this feature does not outway the very annoying
request for an Internet connection. Today, with things reset to Classic, no
request. I'll keep it that way, unless there's another workaround!

Just thought I would update you, per your suggestion!

Thanks again for the help.

You are welcome. Good! Glad to see it seems to be over! Explorer may have come to think it was IE, & therefore requested to go online. They are closely related & can be set to do each others work. But it's best to keep them different, as you do! Keep us informed of any further development or mishap!

| Hello PCR again:
|
| So far, success & thank you -- it appears that your suggestion (2) worked
| upon cold reboot under Classic style; I then proceeded with my preferred
| viewing of Windows Explorer by clicking View and selecting "as Web Page",
| then clicking View again, Folder Options..., View tab, and under "Folder
| views" clicking "Like Current Folder" and performed another cold reboot. The
| problem seems to have gone away for now, but I'll keep all of your
| suggestions locally in a txt file I can access should this problem resurface.
| [Another ommission probably on my part was that I had WE originally set up
| this way -- sounds like I may have to go through this exercise if/when the
| Working Offline issue comes up again.] In each case of testing the progress,
| it should be noted that the computer was NOT connected to the Internet via
| dialup, so perhaps this has resolved the matter for now.
|
| Your fast advice has saved me a lot of hassle in my day-to-day work on my
| (old) machine; I'm very grateful for your assistance.
|
| Best,

| Better update defs & do a virus scan too.

| Free online scan. I think it will not effect a cure, but only report.

| Also McAfee. Will effect a cure for certain viruses only.

| | Recently Windows Explorer opens irregularly, with a dialog box indicating
| | that there is no Internet connection available and halts local browsing of
| | files until this dialog box is closed. No dial-up connection has been made,
| | yet Windows Explorer apparently seeks one before allowing access to local
| | drives. Having searched extensively the Knowledge Base, I cannot locate any
| | instructions which might aid me in defeating this annoying habit of Windows
| | Explorer (WE). [WE worked fine until this point.]
| |
| | My question: how do I restore the independence of WE from Internet
| | connectivity and return to using WE for local file management without having
| | each session to click "Try Again" or [X] (closing) this dialog box to proceed
| | with local file management? It seems as though Internet Explorer (IE) and WE
| | now have become completely linked and I would rather not have to rebuild my
| | machine, as support for Win98/SE will soon be unavailable (a rebuild might
| | thus cause me toloose all of the patches from Microsoft Critical Updates
| | section) -- WE previously operated separate from IE, was not dependent on an
| | Internet connection, and this problem has surfaced only in the last month or
| | so.
| |
| | System details:
| | -Windows 98 SE with all critical updates
| | -dial-up connection only
| | -IE 6.x version
| |
| | I'm familiar with registry edits, can successfully change said without
| | harming system, and am wondering if some sort of registry key has been
| | altered somehow to now expect access to the Internet when opening WE (which I
| | SOLELY use for local file management; browsing is ALWAYS through IE). Any
| | help would be greatly appreciated.
