System Restore......

It's possible that you haven't installed the System Restore Patch - without
which any current restore points are just space fillers.
To check this, look for the file C:\Windows\System\SMGR.DLL - r-click on the
file, and select Properties.
What's the version number? - if it's v4.90.0.3003 then you have installed
the patch, and we have to look elsewhere for the problem
if it's v4.90.0.2533, then you need to install the patch.

To install the patch, either visit Windows Update, or go here, and download
the patch for offline install
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q290700
Run the installer, and windows should reset System Restore at the same time,
clearing your old restore points (which wouldn't have worked, anyhow), and
creating a single new one.
You should then reset the maximum allocation for SR by going to the
adjustment slider at System Properties | Performance | File System | Hard
Disk - most people find that 200-400MB is quite sufficient for most
purposes, unless installing/uninstalling large applications such as Office.

get that fixed, and then post back - we'll have something to fall back on if
it all goes pear-shaped.

I downloaded a program called HijackThis to sort out some
problems, but i accidently right clicked on it, went to properties, and
changed the file type to a word document. The file was initially a
compressed folder, but when I clicked on change, it changed all the
compressed files on the PC to word files. I Don't know how to change the
files back to compressed files. When i right-click and go to new-
compressed folder, that also appears as a word file. How can I change this
back?
Also I have been experiencing problems with the computer crashing
continuously, over the last month especially. The mouse arrow goes crazy
over the screen, and then it just freezes, so i cant even close down any
programs or anything. Could this be related to the compressed files
problem? I thought it was probably a problem with the mouse at first,
but I am not sure.

Oh and thirdly, ive tried to go to system restore but it doesnt seem to
work, it says there are no dates in there even though i created a restore
point only a few months ago. It wont even let me create a new restore
point.
Whats wrong with my pc!!??

Thank in advance, for your help!
