When you get everything back to normal, go to "Tools", "Internet Options",
"Security, "Custom" and decide which ActiveX options you really prefer. It
also sounds like you need some 3rd party security on your unit.

Before trying to edit the registry thoroughly check your system for
unwanted malware, especially so since you say you are unable to use
regedit since disabling regedit is often a side effect of a malware
problem since the malware involved doesn't want you removing it.

Before proceeding further however you might want to try booting to safe
mode and running system restore and roll your system back to a checkpoint
created before the problem started.

Hi!

My Windows ME machine suddenly began posting this error message
"Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on
this page". The computer will not boot up all the way, and I cannot
use the Start button or access files. I googled the error message,
and found a fix involving changing the registry key. To get to the
registry, I opened the computer in Safe Mode, went to the MS-DOS
prompt, and ran REGEDIT. Everything opened up fine, but I cannot
open the HKEY_CURRENT_USER line in the registry - it gives me an
error message.

So my question is, does anyone know another way for me to get
into and edit my registry? And if you happen to know an alternate
way to fix the "ActiveX" message that I am getting, please let me
know.
