Default Problem Defraging Sys Drive (C:)

1. Thank-your for the comeback.

2. I was trying to start DOS from the "sign-off" menu. That got me noplace

3. When I started in SAFE mode at boot, the problem remained.

4. When I started SAFE mode a second time, I chose "Command Prompt".

5. It started and I ran ScanDisk. While I elected to create recovery discs
while in scan disk; it took two floppies to complete the ScanDisk.

6. Following successful completion of ScanDisk, I re-booted in regular
Win98SE mode and invoked ScanDisk again. This time it worked. If found
additional errors, corrected them.

7. I then defragged. That took better than an hour. But then again, I
only have 199KB memory with a processor that I turtle could outrun.

8. Will be running these one a week. I use the machine for subscription
service and the rest of the time I let BOINC have it. Once a week I update
the virus listing, download subscription mail and then it is back to BOINC..

9. I thank-you for the comeback and assistance. Sorry for the individual
posting. Will delve further into posting protocol to try and avoid in the
future.

10. Someone wanted to know why I used Norton's.

a. It was on the machine when I got it.

b. It is a real pain to get it off the system.

c. I have something that works now (the Norton's)

d. Have no idea what to replace it with on this relic

e. As I said, it works now and like my grandfather used to tell me; "If
It Ain't Broke, Don\t Fix It"

11. Why don't I dump the machine - hey, it is faster than 5 X 8 files
cards, a pencil and eraser. (I do have 4 machines on line)

12. Again, thanks for putting up with me. As I said, "Starting In SAFE
Mode and selecting Command Prompt Only solved the problem!!!
