Default still having vid adapter driver probs...

Don't complain - if fixing it is as simple as asking the question, I'd go
with that!

damn, jeff--it seems every time i come to you guys with a
problem, the symptoms disappear magically 'til the
morrow!!! i just rebooted 6 times and each time it came
back to desired settings. i thought perhaps since the
first two times i shut down with 'restart' that maybe that
was the reason it didn't go back to 640x480/16 color, so i
shut down completely for the next tries--perhaps i didn't
leave the pc idle long enough or something [who knows at
this point?? lol]. so, i will either shut down and leave
it idle for quite a while and reboot tonight or tomorrow
and see what happens--then i'll try your last resort. btw-
-i checked in current mode and the value for display.drv
was pnpdrvr.drv--not that i presume that helps any. and
also, for the record, this is a compaq pentium 3 running
win98se and the display adapter driver is a trident
blade3d/mvp4[63]. the two drivers are dated 11-14-1999
and 1-19-2000, respectively [if any of that makes a
diff...]

thanks and i'll let you know what happens!!!

There is one other possibility I can think of. It might

be a complete red
herring, but it's worth a look. When the default display

is installed, do
Start / Run / Sysedit and look in System.INI. Find the

section [boot] and
the entry display.drv. What is the value for this entry?

Then reinstall the drivers and check again. Does the

entry change? Shutdown
and boot to DOS. Do
EDIT C:\Windows\System.INI
and look at the entry again. What is it now?

hi, ron, jeff et al. i've tried all your suggestions

video adapter driver problems and nothing has worked.

to
refresh your memories, in order to attain my desired
800x600 and 16-bit, i have to reinstall the video

adapter
driver at each reboot. i've tried removing everything

and
reinstalling, removing everything and starting in safe
mode, letting the pc install the default driver and then
installing the newest driver--that hasn't worked

[neither
has using the un-updated driver]. no matter what i do,
upon bootup, i have 640x480 and 16 color, then need to
reinstall the driver and restart to get the desired
result. the only difference is that now i don't get the
message stating that there is a problem--i just get
the 'undesired' resolution/colors and have to go through
the reinstall/reboot. any ideas [hope my description is
of assistance to your advice...]???

thanks,
allyson
