From your report, I'm not sure whether you mean that it's the CD-ROM
(player) which isn't being recognised by the OS or rather, - as I suspect -
the CD (media) itself - your Subject title implies the player, which is a
slight (but important) difference.

If you mean the CD's (media), your CD-ROM drive *may* be beginning to fail
(They do!!) However, you need to try to eliminate WinMe as a possible cause
of this problem by checking that the CD-ROM works in Real Mode DOS.

To confirm that you can 'read' CD's in Real Mode DOS :-
Boot, using your WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk in the A: drive.
Select option 2. Start computer with CD-ROM support.

Let the screen information scroll until you eventually see a line which
should report a drive letter for the CD-ROM - but note that it may not
necessarily the same letter as you would expect to see in Windows.

For example, you may see the CD-ROM, becoming the E:, so the screen should
show:
Drive E:= Driver MSCD001 UNIT 0
Your CD-ROM Is Drive E

When the boot disk finally settles down, you will be presented with an A:\
prompt.

Now put a (data) CD into the CD-ROM and at the A:\ prompt, type "E:"
(no quotes and note the colon after the letter E) Then Press Return.

Now, at the E:\ prompt, type "DIR /P" (no quotes and note the space) Then
press Return.

You should see a listing of the CD contents. Try this with several CD's

Come back with your results. Give EXACT error reports - if any

Hi,

I have just reinstalled the OS on my older pentium. The CD-Rom worked to
install the OS, but now that I am in the OS (Windows ME) it can see the CD
Rom drive, but cannot read any CD. Sometimes it recognizes data CDs to
see the name (IE it shows the Windows ME name when that disc is in). Most
of the time it doesn't recognize the CD or thinks it is an audio CD.

Eject the CD works 100% of the time, even from w/in Windows Explorer. I
have changed the CD Rom, to one that I recently tested on another machine,
same thing.

Any ideas?

Thank in advance,
