Default windows 98 floppy disk version

The Win98 folder alone on the CD, is 124 MB, that's about 124
diskettes.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do with the CD, a re-install or
something else. Anyway you might consider this:

The only two files you need to boot to Dos Command Prompt Only with
CDrom support are Mscdex.exe and Oakcdrom.sys. They are on the
startup diskette. Copy those two from A:\ to C:\. Remove the other 3
lines in the Config.sys file. Then change the remaining two lines to
this:
Config.sys file.
C:\Oakcdrom.sys /D:MSCD001
Autoexec.bat file.
C:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001

Those lines provide CDrom support for my DVD and CDRW drives.
They work on most CDroms.

Remove the diskette and boot to Command Prompt Only and see if you
can access the CD. If so, you can run Setup on the CD from Dos to
over install and replace missing files. Then it should boot. Or,
knowing you can now install the OS from the CD you could format the
drive and then do a clean install. Before you do, copy the
autoexec.bat, config.sys, Mscdex.exe and Oakcdrom.sys files to a
floppy so you can copy them back. Then run Setup.exe on the CD.

The idea is to boot to Dos with CDrom support without using a floppy
so you can access the CD. With your limitation you are unable to
boot with the CDrom.

If you format make sure you will be able to access the CD this way
BEFORE you format and that you can copy the four files back as the
Format will erase them. Use Format /s to put the system files on the
HDD. Format.com is on the Startup diskette.

An easy way to re-install is when you can access the CD from Dos
copy just the Win98 folder on the CD to your HDD then boot to Dos
and run Setup.exe from that folder. There are two Setup.exe files on
the CD the other one is only a shortcut. Whenever Windows needs
something from the CD it will look in that folder first. You won't
need the CD at all.

MD Win98 (creates the folder first).
Copy D:\Win98 C:\Win98

If you are unsure of anything post back.

it doesn't work the my computer says it cannot locat win.com so it can't
boot, and a bunch of other files like himem.sys are missing.

But would you happen to know where I could get win98 OS on floppy disks?

no, i have a start up disk. What I need is the FLOPPY DISK VERSION OF WINDOWS
98 instead. My BIOS settings do not allow for the booting of CDs.
I already have the CD version of Windows 98.
Is there any way to download the OS onto FLOPPY DISKS or can i use my CD
version to transfer it to FLOPPY DISKS?

My Laptop only allows for the use of one drive at a time, and since windows
won't boot because it's corrupt and won't boot CD's on startup I have to use
my FLOPPY DRIVE.

Dan,

Try this:

Boot to Dos or use your Win98 Boot diskette then add these lines to
your autoexec.bat and config.sys files:

To Config.sys:
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICEHIGH=C:\windows\command\Oakcdrom.sys /D:MSCD001

To Autoexec.bat:
LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001

Remove your startup disk and boot to Dos Command Prompt Only now you
should be able to access the CDrom. It may be one drive letter
higher than normal. ie D: to E:

After booting to Dos Command Prompt you can get into Windows Safe
Mode with CDrom support by entering:
Win.com /d:m

These lines provide CDrom Dos support for my DVD and CDRW drives.
They work on most CDroms.
