Default Wiping computer and Installing Win 98se

XP is probably using the NTFS file system, which W98 can't understand,
so you'd likely need to FDISK and reformat back to the FAT32 file system.

I have a legal Win 98se CD but unfortunately I do not have the key or
start-up disk!

DISCLAIMER: THE FOLLOWING IS PROVIDED FOR INFORMATIONAL
PURPOSES ONLY. DO NOT DO THIS. IT IS ILLEGAL IN THE UNITED STATES.
IT VIOLATES THE MICROSOFT LICENSE AGREEMENT THAT YOU AGREE TO
WHEN YOU INSTALL WINDOWS98. THIS INFORMATION WAS SENT TO ME
ANONYMOUSLY. I DO NOT KNOW IF IT ACTUALLY DOES WHAT IT PURPORTS
TO DO. I DO NOT WANT TO FIND OUT. DO NOT DO IT.

Copy the entire Win98 directory from the CD to a directory on the hard drive.
Go to that directory (in DOS).

Type: extract precopy1.cab pidgen.dll enter
[ If the next line doesn't work, you may not have debug.exe available,
[ so you'll need to extract it from one of the CAB files. Try this:
[ extract base4.cab ebd.cab enter
[ extract ebd.cab debug.exe enter

Type: debug pidgen.dll enter
Make the dash prompt say: -e 1ed7 enter
Make the next prompt say: xxxx:1ED7 39. 8b enter (just add 8b)
Make the dash prompt say: -e 1edf enter
Make the next prompt say: xxxx:1EDF 39. 8b enter (just add 8b)
Make the dash prompt say: -w enter (add w for "write")
Make the dash prompt say: -q enter (add q for "quit")

run SETUP and type in ANYTHING for the serial number. The only exception
is all zeros; that's apparently a backdoor that was shutdown before
pidgen.dll was released.

Remember... DO NOT DO THIS!!!!

Once you've finished not doing this, don't go to http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html ,
and don't download the "UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service Pack 2.1a",
which contains all the latest updates for the files you didn't just install.
