I wasn't sure what to say exactly, but here goes... My only near-miss with
Vesa was in some shop, contemplating a new-build 486 that would cost far more
than I wanted to spend. The owner was patient, but I was definitely the fish
that got away. I settled for an old 386 and a bubblejet printer, so I could
write up some stuff and print it out with more luxury (and easy of
correction) than the typewriters I was used to. But looking back at this,
long after the 386 died in the cupboard (likely due to lithiun coin cell
drain borking the BIOS before I knew a thing about correcting this), and I
chucked it out not knowing enough to make it work again, I still feel luckier
than I might have if I'd bought that 486 and Vesa and such. But either way it
was a few years before I tried a computer again.
