Glad you were able to retrieve at least some of your data before having to
reformat - sounds like the system was pretty badly screwed (to use a
technical term g), and that was your most effective means of recovery.

Boot to Safe Mode
Open device Manager
REMOVE ALL INSTANCES of ALL Display Adapters, and all Monitors
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the hopefully) correct
drivers
