Default Hey Glee, Bert, and Dapper Dan...

Yes, it's been reinstalling (I've done so about 3 times,
in fact...). I've used the custom install, checked all
the items in bold; it connects me to the internet,
downloads components, installs everything. I have
followed the instructions very carefully. When I reboot
into windows, I get the little drum with the
message "updating system settings."

Then that's when I get the error messages; I click OK on
them, then when they're all done, I am back where I
started with a blank desktop, no programs running.

My Hijackthis log? I didn't do anything with it. I'm not
used to doing much outside of a windows environment (all
of what I've been doing the past 24 hours is totally new
to me; I'm learning a lot!) so I didn't know I should
have done anything after hijackthis was done. I didn't
delete anything; I don't know what most of it means,
whether it's critical to keep or not, that is.

I'll try again tomorrow (Sunday) and post my results. I
truly appreciate all your help.

Sally

It does not sound as if you are actually re-installing

IE. Choose the 'Custom'
option and then select only those items that were

previously installed....they
should be shown in bold letters in the Custom install

dialog.

Follow the instructions carefully, and step by step, in

the articles we have linked
previously:

Blank Desktop or Illegal Operations Error Message After

You Install Internet
Explorer:

Recovering From a Failed Internet Explorer Upgrade in

Windows 98:

Where is your Hijack This log? What forum have you

posted it on? Please post it
here also.

One option you can try if the other procedures fail to

fix it, is to set ProgMan as
the shell, use the Run dialog to run this command, for

IE5x:
RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV.DLL,IE5Maintenance

or this, if you have IE6x installed:
RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV.DLL,IE6Maintenance

If choosing the Repair option does not help, and

reinstalling also does not help,
run the command and choose to "Restore the previous

Windows configuration". Then
install IE6 fresh after that.

I ran Hijackthis and CWSshredder on my problem machine.
CWS found 2 files in IE that it fixed. Thought it was
taken care of, reinstalled IE6, rebooted back into
windows, and still got the error messages about shdocvw
and shdoc401 dll's missing.

Q: do I need to reinstall IE5 first, THEN IE6? I fear

my
headache will involve reinstalling W98....I think I'd
rather build a new system first sigh.

Thanks for your previous help; any advice on how to
continue?
