First thing to check is the driver software for the
video card. If not identified by brand and model in
/ start / settings / control panel / system / device manager
(which probably shows a yellow triangular trouble flag)
you can run free diagnostics (e.g. from
www.belarc.com )
then go to the manufacturer's web site to download
the right driver for Win98,
then load it via the same screen / Properties.

Alternatively, has the monitor changed? The quick
cure for this is to remove all entries for Monitor in
the Device Manager, then reboot, and Windows is
supposed then to detect the monitor and load the
drivers it requires (usually generic.)
