See my article, "Clean Boot -- What it is and why you need it"
http://www.grystmill.com/articles/cleanboot.htm

Also, Defrag won't work from a floppy startup disk regardless. It's a
Windows 32-bit app and can't be run from DOS (which is what the Startup
floppy uses.)

If, after following the suggestions in my article Defrag still has problems,
then come back for some specific fixes. Does it *never* leave 0%? I suggest
you watch Details to get best info.

Hi the defrag ran forever! It came back EVEN after 24 hours "0" percent
complete
OK the defreg in not on the "Windows 98 Starts here" disk. Where can I get
it If it is not on the system? -- ONE thing I found out on the
bootdisk.com
that you have to clean off the temp files before doing the defrag. Maybe
that
is why it took so long. I guess with the XP version it does it
automaticly.
It also said not to dreg using the scandisk because it could cause
problems
on the disk. PLUS you should to the scandisk BEFORE Defrag.

Exactly how did you start Defrag?
What exactly happened when you started Defrag....what did you see on the
screen?

BTW, the "startup disk", if you mean the boot floppy disk, does not
contain Defrag.

going
through the defragmentation within window BUT it ran forever BUT
nothing
happened. I think the defragmentation program is not on the system. IF
I put
the startup disk into the computer will I be able to load the defrag.
program
onto the computer WITHOUT setting up Windows 98 again?
