Default CD drives not working

Boot, using your WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk in the A: drive.
Select 2. Start computer with CD-ROM support.
Let the screen information scroll until you eventually see a line similar
to:
Your CD-ROM drives are E and F (make a note of each of their letters)
N.B. these letters will not be the same as you would normally expect!

Insert a CD into the first CD-ROM and at the A:\ prompt, type "dir e:" (no
quotes, use the letter(s) from above and note the space and colon) then
press
Return.

If your CD-ROMs are working OK you should get a directory listing of the
contents of the CD, if not you will get an error report.

Hello ppl. not sure if this is a hardware issue or software
issue so here it goes,I have two cd drives a Sony CD-R-RW,
set as sec. master, another sony(regular) cd drive set as
slave.Installed this last one six months ago and had no
problems with either, till yesterday morning when I
inserted a cd on the main drive and it wouldn't run,
clicked start\run browse and chose the main cd drive
and was told no cd was inserted poped the cd out and into
the other drive and nothing, same as before.Clicked on "My
computer" icon and when it opens I see both drives there,
Went to controlpanel\system\DeviceManager and checked the
properties for each drive, windows says both are working
properly,it just won't recognize any cd's at all.
Oh guess I should've put this at the begining(sorry bout
that) have windows Me retail ver. all updates and sec.
packs in place, 2.4GHz Intel pentium 4 ,80Gb hard drive,
1.24 GB of RAM .Ran a sweep of the system with; Adaware,
spybot,and McAfee virus scan v8.0,all report normal(all
apps. up to date)would appreciate any ideas you can throw
my way,thanks.
