Default Win98 as print server

I have one desktop running Win98 and two laptops running XP. The
desktop has an ethernet card and is directly connected (wire) to a DSL
modem/rouer. The laptops are wireless. I cannot seem to find the
printer or the desktop on the netork when attempting to access the
printer from the laptops.

File and print sharing is installed under Control Panel-Network.
All computers have the same Workgroup name. The printer is shared.

The laptops have a similar IP (domain) to that of the DSL modem,
192.168.1.1. Under Control-Panel/Netwrok the desktop is set up for DHCP
and acquires its IP automatically. When running winipcfg, it shows the
IP as 138.88.xx.xx, the DHCP server as 192.168.1.1 as well as the DNS
server.

I read some older posts that appeared to indicate that I need to have
all the computers in the same domain (first 3 digits of the IP same) in
order for them to see each other. I tried to set a static IP for the
desktop to force this, but then lost internet access.

I can ping the desktop from the laptop using the 138.88.xx.xx IP, but
not print.

I would appreciate any advice on how to fix this.

TIA
