FWIW, I saw lots of shutdown problems with BellSouth ADSL service here.
Once we swiched to cable internet and got rid of the DSL modem, the
shutdown troubles disappeared.


Well, I've gone from an ADSL USB modem to...an ADSL USB modem.

In all likelihood, just *one* file could have been making the
difference. The trick, of course, is being able to track down *which*
file...and terminating it with extreme prejudice.
