Default Little Things Mean A Lot (Of Hassle)

No reason for posting this, except perhaps to ease the troubled minds of
those of you struggling with shutdown and restart problems.

I started having these problems (specifically with 'Restart') just over
three years ago. I already had the DFS patch installed, and I tried just
about every other method of diagnosing and circumventing the confounded
thing - all to no avail.

Last week, I bought a new modem. My old one (a Dynamode A360) was on the
way out, so I replaced it with a brand-new Thomson SpeedTouch. I'd had
the Dynamode installed for...just over three years.

Since uninstalling the AmecSA software for the Dynamode, and installing
the Thomson software, this ole PC boots to desktop faster, shuts down
*much* faster, and (so far, so good) will do a shutdown and restart
without any problem.

So there you are. The trouble is, of course, that you'd need to go
through a few dozen laps of uninstalling stuff to be able to find what
might be causing the problem for *you*. Unless by chance you had to
replace your modem... :-)
