Default SVGA suddenly gone

It all started with me loading a driver for an HP T45 printer. Didn't work.
I got rid of the printer and manually erased directories referring to the
printer. Then I tried to uninstall-reinstall the printer driver. Now
windows couldn't find the printer driver at all.

At this point I reinstalled windows 98. Now my Win98 partition swore that I
had only 16 color vga available. It couldn't even find my SVGA driver. (I
have a Dell monitor. I then reinst5alled win98 1 more time and no change.
VGA only.

The other partition on my computer is fine, and can see my SVGA monitor
fine. However, win98 limps along in 16 colors. I conclude that my BIOS is
fine on the other side of the disk partition, and so I'm not having a battery
problem. The system is maybe 2 years old. Yes I really need win98 to run an
XP-incompatable $20 scanner. Besides, I love win98 because it boots up fast
and gives my eyes a wonderful headache-preventing 480 x 640 pixel resolution.
Would that other systems were so sane. What's so bad about great ergonomics?

So, what's wrong? Why no SVGA? Ideas? Why no HP printer driver either?
