Default Nvidia driver problem

My 600 mhz desktop system locks up after a short time of
usage. When this happens, I can only shut the machine off
via the switch. It seems to stem from the PCI Nvidia
graphics card I installed. I downloaded the newest driver
from Nvidia's website, but this was no help. Every bootup,
the message comes up saying "new PCI video driver
detected". In "My Computer"/"System", I finally have it so
there are not 2 drivers listed (one with an exclamation
point), under "Display".Windows will look for the correct
driver". I click "cancel" at this message, and the bootup
continues normally. If I let Windows search for
the "better" driver, select and install it, it plays havoc
with the machine (boots to Safe mode, won't display
greater than 256 colors, etc.- much playing around then
needed to get even the half-assed performance described
above). It's possible that the driver conflicts with
NetZero vers. 7.0 software---but these types of video
driver problems have existed at different times even
prior to NetZero.
