John, I can't help with the rest of your problem, but do you have a
Panda AV installed? WebProxy is a Panda Antivirus Titanium Internet
Resident File. It wants internet access, and email download fails if
you don't allow it. It insists on sitting there on the connection tab
(ZoneAlarmPro), listening. I don't give it Server rights. It, and
other Panda aps sometimes give errors and get shut down. Running a
repair by double-clicking the Setup.exe and choosing repair will
usually fix it. Panda is an excellent AV App, but a resource hog.

Hi

I'm using W98 first edition and was happy with 1024 x 768 resolution
using a video card that has these things written on it:
P/N 1024022922 000013
AMC ver 2.0
ATI 3D
1998 ATI Technology Ltd
and Rage Pro Turbo AGP on one of the chips,

together with an old Samtron 8514/A Comp vdu.

I tried, mistakenly obviously, to install a V-Stream TV-PVR PCI tv
card, even though the minimum requirements include W98 SE.

The installation failed, and it kinda wrecked my setup.

Now, I can only get 640x480 and the next one up to work, I can't get
back to 1024 x 768. If I try it, I get heavy horizontal line
interference.

I've found the original ATI discs and I've used their installation

to
get the right drivers. I've tried a few alternative drivers too,
including simple Super VGA.

What I haven't done is try to re-install W98. I'm trying to avoid
that.

I've also started to get, at the end of startup: WebProxy, this
program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down,

etc.
I did notice WebProxy running previously and wondered what it was. I
have checked with an Anti-Virus and with Ad-Aware.

Also, I'm not convinced that all of V-Stream has gone. Uninstall
didn't remove it from the menu so I used Windows add/remove programs
to do it.

Finally, the V-Stream installation didn't go right in the first

place,
there are two product options and I installed the wrong one first.

I don't think I need detailed instructions about what to do .. what
I'm missing is a direction to head in. I'm pretty knowledgeable

about
computers generally (I've a degree in Internet Computing), but I
concentrate on that area, not on Windows OS, so I've never messed
around with the registry or anything like that.

I have ordered a W98 troubleshooting book. You see where I'm at? I
need a strategic direction for what to do next.

Or, obviously, a solution, if you know it :-)

Any clues?

J
