Default Windows 98 screen properties/settings no longer responds

Hi everybody,

I have a Windows 98 second edition, the screen was originally set to 800 x
600 pixels.

It happened around a month ago that as I started my computer, the windows 98
stopped responding. Therefore, I restarted the computer on the safe mode,
went to help-troubleshooting, and did as per directions of "My computer stops
responding when I try to start Windows 98." After restarting the computer, I
could not get back my original screen settings, 800 x 600 with 256 colors.

I could not figure out the problem. I tried restoring backup files. My
autoexec. bat looked empty. I thought may be my autoexec.bat got overwritten
or something; therefore, I copied autoexec.ths (not sure) on to autoexec.bat.

My screen settings remain at 640 x 480 pixels with 16 colors. Everytime, I
try changing the settings, it prompts for restarting, and after restarting,
it remains all the same. Reading and typing have become difficult because of
the screen.

I not sure what all I lost, but some voice files were not functional after
that. Some codex files needed to play those files had disappeared, which I
had to reinstall from a CD disk. Also, the automatic monitor shut off has
remained nonfunctional.

I tried asking a few people, but none of them seem to have an answer or even
of heard of such a thing.

Look forward on to your kind help.

God bless you!

Philip
